In this episode of the North West Aerospace Alliance News, Emma and Daniel delve into the revolutionary Tornado 2 Tempest project. This innovative initiative, led by Additive Manufacturing Solutions Ltd., the UK Ministry of Defence, and Rolls-Royce, is making history by repurposing high-criticality metals from retired Tornado aircraft into 3D-printed parts for the next generation of Tempest fighter jets. Learn how titanium and other metals are being extracted, atomized into powders, and used in additive manufacturing to create components that meet the stringent safety and performance standards required for military aviation. The project has already produced a 3D-printed nose cone for the Orpheus engine, successfully passing all necessary tests. Recognized with the CDLS Commendation, this collaboration highlights the North West aerospace cluster's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and efficiency, paving the way for a circular economy in the defence sector.
