Burnley College and the Retirement of David Meakin
In this episode, Emma and Daniel discuss the retirement of David Meakin, the long-standing Chairman of Governors at Burnley College. With a background as a qualified Accountant and a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics, David has had a 35-year career in the NHS before retiring in 2005 as Director of Finance and Deputy Chief Executive. Over the last decade, he has seen his vision for expansion and growth at Burnley College come to life, including the relocation to a purpose-built campus, the introduction of new qualifications, and the creation of Themis, the award-winning Apprenticeship training arm. The College has been named Number 1 College in England in the Government’s National Achievement Rate Tables for 16–18-year-olds. As David prepares for retirement, he is confident about the future of the College, with recruitment numbers up and finances in a strong position. His successor, David Brown, is expected to bring valuable local authority experience and excellent people management skills.
